Velenje is a town and municipality in northern Slovenia. The municipality has 33.331 inhabitants. Staro Velenje is first mentioned in written doucments dating to 1264 and 1374 as small market town and was a center of handicraft and trade. The lignite mining industry in the area contributed to the expansion of the town, especially after World War II. The new part of town was called Novo Velenje until, after the death of the Yugoslav president Tito in 1981, the entire town was renamed Titovo Velenje in his honour. In 1991, shortly before Slovenia became independent, the name of the entire settlement was changed back to Velenje.
